Self Introduction (Final Draft)

Subject: Self-introduction to professor Brad Blackstone.

Dear professor Blackstone,

I am currently pursuing my Bachelor of Engineering with Honors in Mechanical Engineering. Previously coming from Institute of Technical Education (ITE), I achieved Higher NITEC in Mechanical Engineering with an achieving mindset I departed from ITE to Singapore polytechnic Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering direct second year. After graduating from polytechnic, I had some time to think about which course to choose to pursue in the different universities in Singapore.

After seeing the courses available in the university Singapore Institute of Technology and having a background in mechanical engineering, I decided to continue my studies in mechanical engineering. The reason why I did not continue my studies in aerospace is because, what I learned in Singapore polytechnic is mainly specialized in the aerospace industries, which is very in-depth. Compared to that, what I will learn in mechanical engineering which is broader since I learn something that will be helpful if I apply for jobs after I graduate. The reason why I have continued to pursue engineering is that I love to do engineering calculations such as mechanics and engineering maths!

The strengths I have in communication is that I can speak confidently with a clear voice and be able to speak well if the speech is well-rehearsed. My weakness is that I sometimes stutter my words when I am presenting, and I tend to get nervous very quickly if I make a mistake.

What I would like to gain from MEC 1821, Effective Communication, is how to recover from a mistake when I am speaking upfront on the stage, how to write a concise report which will be useful when I am working, and how not to stutter as much.

Critical Reflection

This module MEC 1281 Effective Communication has taught me how to correctly write a formal letter of introduction, executive summary, an official report as well as how to be confident and present myself in front of my classmates. Although not having the chance to have a presentation to other people from other classes, this allowed me to improve my upfront speaking skills. This module also gave me an insight into how a formal technical report needs to be written, which will be helpful for my future final year project report write-up. Having a time limit to pitch our ideas to each of our team members has allowed me to know how to give a short and to-the-point speech which may help me in my future work if I want to pitch an idea for my final year project or higher-ups. The letter of introduction has taught me how to express myself positively by talking about my personal goal and what I would like to achieve in this module. Design Summary & Analysis Final Draft (improved from Professor Blackstone's comments)

In the article entitled "Force-Sensing Gloves Cloud Control An iPhone By Detecting Gestures and How Objects Are Gripped," Owen (2019) mentions that Apple wanted to create a glove technically capable of engaging with technologies for individuals. This glove is made of fabric meshed with conductive layers that sense the forces applied in the glove when the user touches a surface. In addition, this glove will detect how much pressure is applied and the number of fingers used. The author also states that Apple will look at different ways a user can control an application without interacting with the touchscreen. The glove will include conductive strands that are woven together with normal threads and thus able to monitor contact outside while the inside contains sensors for compression from the fingers.
